So Long Summer...i'm taking Seven Days Off to Move My Clan North...

***

your feeble teacher must take the next seven days off (one for each Realm) from DL'ing
to move my Clan from our beautiful abode here at Two Tree Manor (Shiva dancing)
up the Rim a tad north by ten kilometers to our new h(om)e...an absolutely
stunning Pranically saturated historic Farmhouse (Brahman creating) just a white karma stone's throw from the base of the Sacred Peak (Vishnu sustaining).

then, i and WF Master Student L'Gate from NYC are on a Dharma Pilgrimage together up to Ouray and Telluride to run the formidable Imogene Pass Race.

more on that,
you,
and
It All
later.

for now, i leave you with images from perhaps the ultimate way for a new Clan like mine to say "Hasta La Vista" to what has been an astonishingly beautiful, wet, luscious, and incredible summer.

my Prayers for my Daughters' first summer have been answered 10,000 x 10,000 fold (though, i am gettin' this undeniable TAF coming in, that it is She whom is producing such abundant miracles!).

Perhaps the
largest benefit from ParentHood;
how to fill the Mundane with undeniable Bliss?
just have your child reMind you of what you have forgotten...

"Just Begin Again...and Again, and Endlessly Again." - the WF Maxim

i didn't put the WF Maxim, "Just Begin Again...and Again" on my
Wholistic Fitness Sport Jersey
for no go(o)d reason, as i coach temporarily fallen Online Student B below:

Coach-

To update you . . .

I've been out of town for the last 2 weeks - settled my daughter into her new college home in Massachusetts, then off to Pittsburgh to help my family pack up our childhood home and move my mother to Florida to live with my sister. A crazy 2 weeks. My EMR was spotty at the beginning of the 2 weeks and then just plain dropped off.

Ran out of all herbs and MAP, while also running out of cash. A dilemma.

But you once e-mailed me to "just begin, again and again" and so I am.

Ordered MAP today and the herbs.

Will begin EMR in the a.m. and consistent DL.

Many thanks,
B

Recent monsoon activity has swollen Oak Creek, as witnessed by this view at West Fork last week. This spot is less than 15 miles from my front door. The water is still quite cold for swimmers in shady areas, but warmer when they move into sunnier pools. (Betsey Bruner/Arizona Daily Sun)

Growing up, i thrived on memorizing poems and sacred scripture excerpts, and quotes that stirred my Chi. surviving (barely) the eighties as a sponsored extreme athlete (synonymous with 'extreme partying'), has pretty much deleted most of my memorization skills. however, many of the Chi quotes still stick to my cells and pop up during high-intensity silence or sweat sessions. it with great honor that i begin sprinkling your own Practice with these pivotal sayings which graced my own Chi Development...use them with your Highest Integrity and they will empower your Path...

5% Efficient? Why settle for that?

Cardio commuting to town via the Lower Oldham Trail. bicycles are 80% energy efficient; only 20% of any caloric energy used in bicycling goes to move the bike. everything else is used to MOVE! on race bikes, the stats are even better! photo by Ananda.

***

as a New Daddy Warrior, there are a whole lot of environmental issues tearing at my spiritual tissues these days...watching my cherished zen-influenced spartan lifestyle begin bulging at the seams is an exercise of WF Lifestyle Principle #1 for sure.

i'm constantly breathing and asking for Mother Earth/Father Sky forgiveness as i run enough water through my faucet to float a boat as i wash baby bottles. that's just the start.

one of the most searing stabs at my increase upon Mothers' resources comes from my near lack of a principle of WF that i first began forwarding as far back as the early eighties; Cardio Commuting.

granted, i am doing about 90% of my New Daddy Warrior errands on my motorcycle (and my POWERBAR backpack has literally split its seams and zippers as i push the limits on the poor thing's carrying capacity nearly each day).

as i whiz past all my Cardio Commuting bros and sista's here in Flag (which is a bicycle-commuting mecca) i wince as i throttle my sport bike into a corner instead of pedaling into it as i was once so accustomed.

then...then arrives the odd day where ilg is forced into a car.

oooof.

cars.

our cars outweigh us by at least 20 to 1. a Pruis weighs 2,900 lbs and a Suburban loads the roads at 5k+!

that means nearly 95% (yes...95%!!!) of the precious Dinosaur flesh and blood is being used to simply MOVE THE VEHICLE.

in what other human enterprise would we settle for 95% INEFFICIENCY!?!?

a bicycle, by contrast, weighs often less than one-fifth of what you do.

less than 20% of the energy goes to moving the vehicle.

contemplate this as we clamber out of the car to fill up our tanks at even the
now archaic price of $4/gallon: $3.80 is simply feeding the machine.

sobering facts as i prepare to move my Clan out to the country where an additional 10 miles per round trip to town will spiritually itch at me each time ilg is forced into a car. upside? this winter (which is when ilg actually drives cars), i'll be reducing my drives to the ski areas in significant volumes and relying on my own nordic/snowshoe courses in my back and front 'yards'.

all of this is an ongoing exercise in WF Lifestyle Principle Number 3: Appropriate Action.

May this DL inspire all my WF Warriors to bike twice, drive once.

i do my best...that's all i can do...or you.

Live like a tree, not like fire.

love,

your mountain yogi

Coach!

Congratulations on your beautiful new book. I was pleasantly surprised to see a copy of it on our desk as I arrived at work this week. Of course I have yet had the opportunity to get my hands on it to read, but I was permitted to touch it and gaze upon it. ;-)

Whlie I was gazing I casually flipped the book over. My mouth dropped open to see what was on the back cover. What a wonderful discovery!
My beloved was even more surprised and very touched.

Thanks for the Chi Hit!

Namaste,
Patricia

Hey Coach:

O....M....G! I just received your PRANIC JUNKIE book and I am all the way through to Insight #15 - relationships... You are so right!

I want to come out to see you guys next spring. I want to be the glow of your presence again (it has been too long) and see your beautiful family. I am so happy for you.

Thank you for your wisdom and strength and gift of faith - I now embark on the next part of my life, knowing (more) who I am and what I seek...There are no mistakes, just lessons and I am learning how to trust where I am going, without too many questions or judgements.

Your book has been such a gift already in the first hour that I have held it in my hands. I am great-ful to you beyond words.

Sincerely and humbly yours,
Claudia

EC,

I always feel soooo good after your yoga classes!

It's funny too... I've started bouldering recently. I need to do something with all this 'pesky upper body strength' that I've gained from HP yoga! So if you're ever going out give me a call -- I'd love to tag along.

See you in class...

Steve/Coach,
What an inspiration the description of your Hopi running experiences on DL has been. I really have not watched the Olympics this year mainly because of the way the American broadcasters cover it and focus on the stars that the corporations will make money from which is disillusioning and of course the Tibet issue, it just does not make me excited to watch them. I have started a blog, http://diaryofachicagoslacker.blogspot.com/ ,I am on my slow path to holistic health. But when I read about your pain issues, I do feel like a slacker not pushing myself that extra little bit, but some of my old clothes are fitting me now so that is at least a sign of progress. When my financial situation gets back on track I do hope to get out for a private session weekend, hopefully before Dewa goes to high school.

Anyways, the great descriptions of your Hopi races gives me a little taste of the southwest even if I can't get out there ....And reading DL everyday(or I try to) helps move me a little bit more out of slackerdom!!!!

Steve,

Many thanks for HP Yoga class last night: it allowed me access into my breath in ways I hadn't previously experienced. My thoughts flew randomly in "corpse pose" and during the class I felt my concentration wasn't as focused as possible, but after class I was so privately engrossed, it took me many hours to entirely emerge.

With gratitude and humility,

Dear Coach,

As the spring buds, my practice evolves. It has become less of a new
experience, and more of a way of life. I cannot imagine life without
Wholistic Fitness. I am so lucky to have found such a powerful and
healthful way of life.

I spent the last few days with some work mates, three men, geologists like
me, all overweight, all huge meat eaters. Two of the three are former
alcoholics. They all skip breakfast and lunch and then eat chicken fried
steak for dinner. Their caoloric intake is less than mine, and yet their
waistlines are huge. They look at me strangely as I consistently choose
not to have meat, and scarf down lunches as they smoke ther cigarettes. A
sorry state of affairs. And yet they are extremely intelligent and
successful people. Very similar paths as I. I don't get it and neither
do they. I can only hope that being with me, they are inspired to make
healthier choices. I love them still.

I awoke this morning long before others, and went through my WF Early Morning Ritual DVD and Green
Tara HP yoga Routine from TOTAL BODY TRANSFORMATION
in my motel room. My day has remained light and energized.

Dear Coach ~

Did it! The “Impossible Panther” 12 hour adventure race is in the books. Started out at 7 am with a 4 mile climb up 900’ Morrow Mountain and ended at 6:52 pm crossing the line after a 45 minute mad dash on bikes, a furious paddle across the river and hauling the canoes (one more time) up to the finish line.

As a newbie, i got a couple of hours off during the paddle section. All told, it was probably 9 hours of racin’ for me. i hung in there, kept up, finished strong, felt pretty darn good afterwards and felt fine Sunday and Monday.

I thank you, Steve.
My body thanks you, Steve.
And, most of all, my mind thanks you, Steve.

I have never been quite so motivated by a "class" before. In a few short weeks, your HP yoga classes, along with the fabled, Thursday night "butt-kicking Prop Class", have had a direct and profound impact on my fitness regime. In AND out of class, I feel BETTER. I feel stronger; physically, but MENTALLY stronger as well. I've seen myself running further and faster and finding strength when I thought that I was spent. I push myself to a level in class that I never thought I could go to. On occasion, I have found myself in/near tears in class -- not in pain, but surrounded by more motivation and more energy than I ever thought I could muster. It's amazing, really. You're amazing. Thank you for helping me to find this in myself and I look forward to continuing to make progress through your techniques.

I bow to you, from this blissful state of fatigue and sweat. May you know how wonderful you are, and how happy I am that YOU'RE here.

Namaste,

Coach,
I’ve been following your thoughts and teachings now for a year, since I picked up Total Body Transformation.
I decided that I want to take the practice to the next level, so I’m starting with SUNRIDER HERBS!

It’s been a great season so far – IM Arizona, 1st place in every division in both a 12hr and 24hr Adventure race, top 5 in a couple duathlons. And, to some extent because of your writings, I’ve ventured into some mtb races that have kicked my ass and humbled me.

Please keep doing what you do, we depend on you for that.

Very cute kid, by the way.

EC,

Coach I realize I am working on peeling layers…. (the ego is a tough sum bitch!) I do want to live w/ less suffering, more compassion and experience some sort of real liberation from the bullshit I let happen (see fall from WF). I know I can but the ego pushes the doubts and old behaviors for sure. I am training hard, haven’t had any alcohol in almost 6 months. This year I have put in many miles, ST, Yoga and finally gotten back into bike racing…not sure if I am satisfying my ego or using it to break my ego which is my real effort….anyway I guess I will find out soon as I stepped up big time for a 100 miler….see....Tahoe Sierra 100

I would very much like to wear your
WF Blessed Training Mala
soaked in your spirit and strength…

Thank you very much Coach Ilg.

the depth in which you feel, see and share….I feel fortunate to read your writing and that you share. Rockin me bro, chi hits to the max!

Up, up and in. Wow.

The Way Higher Goes Through (not around) the Hips

A private student experiencing genuine hip opening under the lovingly fierce feet of coach ilg in the WF Temple Zendo. photo by Ananda

STUDENT:
Dear Coach,
In the process of pairing down various aspects of my life, I'm jettisoning my endurance-centric focus and am going back to the basics: breath, posture and more specifically, my hips.

COACH:
the Way Higher (upper chakral fields) leads through the Hips (lower chakral fields).
glad to hear that your Journey of Awakening through WF is making it clear that your Next Step Higher is a dive deeper into your Hips. Many warriors shy away from this formidable headwall along the Steep and Direct Path of Transformation.

STUDENT:
Apparently, my lack of hip flexibility is what is holding me back from various inversions and hand/head balancing asanas in yoga. It is also a major challenge in my return to martial arts (more on that later).

COACH:
get ready for Anger, Pain, Sadness, and Attachment issues to be danced with, honored, and conquered as you commit to your opening of thy hips.

STUDENT:
What I want to do is focus my energies on improving my hip flexibility over the next two years with a very intensive jump start from 9/1-9/30.

COACH:
Young Warrior,
i have Taught you; No Spikes On The Graph.
do not repeat the your Pattern of "very intensive jump starts" which soon deflate in the face of daily life. integrate your hip opening efforts wisely with...

Dear Steve;
I have been a low-level practitioner of your teaching; I have your
books and DVDs, and I am trying, but that's all I can say. I have one
passion in my life, and I am wondering if you could help me. I am a
surgical resident, and I can tell you without an ounce of cynicism or
false pretense that my passion is to become a surgeon who can heal and
help people in need. I am not that talented, but I am not that clumsy
or stupid either. My problem is I am somewhat feable in disposition,
and I get easily flustered when it comes to tense situation. Can you
help me to obtain the state of mind that maintains zen like calmness
even in the most dire situation?
Thank you
Joon

So, what are we supposed to do? Just sit around and do nothing? Of course not. Do it, whatever it is, impeccably, however, don't think you're the One 'doing it.' Learn to let "it" flow through Thee. Most Noble MAP Amino Warriors,

Namaste!

as a coach that attempts to give you as much Wholistic Weaponry at the lowest possible prices,
i have to assume most of you who are sincere about your Wholeness and High Performance,
are following my blog(s)
to get my ongoing Teachings...which include the
incredible, ongoing flow of MAP Amino Acid testimonials...
it has been an incredible summer of MAP success.

two of my most telling personal experiences this summer with MAP has come in the form of
watching the incredible lightspeed of neurological hooking up,
emotional harmony, and neuromuscular coordination that
my 11 month-old daughter; Dewachen, has exuded compared to non-MAP fed infants.

i mean, if there was EVER a experiential lab to observe the impact of a positive nitrogen balance
in a body whereupon billions and billions of biologic molecular turnover and regeneration is tantamount,
it is in an infant. Dewa's mental acuity, motor skills, body symmetry, and emotional happiness is absolutely off the chart.

this to me, is largely an affect of her cellular body being nourished through breast milk from Joy
through which Dewa receives the MAP Amino Acids.

also, my summer of traditional Hopi Footracing where i finished no worse than 4th place in my AG is
another fantastic accomplishment of MAP's influence on my cellular body; cuz ilg ain't no runner!
and, to severely pull a hamstring on a descent in my final 8k race, then, be able to recover enough
to teach yoga two days later?

that's called, Optimal Cellular Regeneration, Oh Noble Warriors!

do not EVER doubt the impact of being in a Positive Nitrogen Balance and the only way i
know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you can insure you are in such an optimal state of
cellular harmony?

dat's right:

Coach's MAP Amino Acid Weblink

let's pray that this small company stays around!

please keep ordering; make MAP your
and your family's
Number One Priority for your molecular body and you will NOT go awry!

Now, here is a great question from WF Online Warrioress Bonnie,
and is answered by our go-to guy at MAP; Andrew Nudelman.

if you ever have ANY questions relating to your intake of

MAP Amino Acids, you receive my complimentary guidance 24/7
as long as you remain an active affiliate of me.

MAP Q and A:

Dear Body Health:

I am trying to re-order MAP online. I have entered Steve Ilg's name as my
afffiliate, but keep getting a response that says that is the wrong
affiliate. Perhaps I need his affiliate number to order. Can you give it
to me? I will also contact him regarding this.

Thank you.

Hello Bonnie, you are already associated with Coach Ilg's account. You do not need
to enter his name in the affiliate box. You should pick another option from

It seems the system will not allow you to put his name in again.

As long as your order every 120 days, your association will be continued.

This Ain't The World Championships Any Longer...

this ain't the World Championships any longer...

(the Olympics are the same as the World Championships...just every Four Years they are 'called' the Olympics).

it's a friggin' freak show of insipid, interlaced control by China's 'government'...

i saw footage of the Women's Marathon...so sterile...the 'observers' (formerly known as 'fans') were kept at Prisoner Type distance from the athletes (who can cheer from a football field length away from the athletes...compare to Alpe de Huez in the Tour!)...the bleakness of it all...good God, what has happened?!?!

is this REALLY the same culture that produced "Taoism"? "The Tao te Ching?"

May China feel better about themselves after their freak show is over.

They need to. Obviously. Sadly.

If ilg had qualified for this particular "World Championships"? i'd not go.
i'd do what i have done in the past...

RACE DAY IN OLD ORAIBI; WHEN A PILGRIM PULLS A HAM

i had found my Prayer Wheel; and it was my own flying feet...

- an injured coach ilg, in the final 800 meters of the Old Oraibi 8k footrace

The START LINE was a scratch of blue cornmeal across the weather-smoothed dirt in the America's most continuously inhabited village Old Oraibi.

Race Director Juwan Nuvayokva, the Hopi Harrier himself (#10 above photo), was giving final pre-race instructions. Wave of chi radiated from this six-time State Cross Country Champion who was born in this very village sprung from the rock themselves.

i took my place on the Start Line. Around me were 105 runners, 99 of them were Hopi, Navajo, or Zuni. only 6 of us were panaah (white man). i wanted, deeply as a Hopi drumbeat, to be the first panaah across the line.

during my warm up sprints, i was captivated by the long, graceful legs of a Hopi female runner from Ganado...having lived a life among world's fittest beings, i sensed immediately; 'she was SomeOne.' Moments later, on the Start Line, Juwan introduced a few of the VIP Racers...including the long-legged elegant warrioress now standing of my right shoulder, Alvina Begay...

2-time top 10 finisher at the U.S. Half Marathon championships, including a 1:12:57 PR earlier this year. Alvina placed 10th Overall in the 2007 New York City Marathon, finishing in 2:42:46.

Running, you see, is in Hopi blood as much as 'red' is in mine.

It was great honor to share Sacred Sweat with these unbelievably beautiful Beings in this most ancient place of this h(om)eland of ours; Turtle Island.

Juwan shouted "Go!" and we took off at a fast, albeit controlled, pace throughout the dusty adobe and rock walls of Oraibi where not much has changed since the 1100's. i settled into around 10th place and made sure Alvina was nearby. i'd use her as a pacing tool for the first few kilometer descent off the mesa. once we hit the sagebrush mesa flats below, i'd try to keep her within sight for as long as possible. i figured if ANYONE would know how to pace a race like this, she would. Besides, her nifty-fleet body was a joy to be inspired by as my sufferfest meter started climbing as high as the Hopi sky.

Kilometer 1; Soft dirt descent. Still in around 10th place, i was having the time of my life; enjoying my transformation from cyclist last summer, to runner this one. The sight and sense of me, panaah, in this flying flock of gathered Hopi's running with their long, quiet strides and sandstone solid heads, was thrilling. i felt fit, fast, and capable of a podium in my Age Group...and i desperately wanted to represent the panaah with bravery.

my deeply penetrating sacred joy would soon come to a very, very abrupt transition.

it occurred approaching Kilometer 2, still on this soft dirt descent from the village and the mesa upon which it has sat for eons. i was running side-by-side with Alvina on the two-track descent. a group of 8 Hopis were already ahead, lengthening the distance between them and us. behind me, a thundering herd of 100 Hopis hammering the descent.

that's when i made a tactical blunder and would pay dearly for it...

DO NOT MISS THE WHOLE EPIC STORY and Technical and Dharma Teachings i used to finish this race with a severely pulled hamstrings and...find out how i did!

Old Oraibi Footracing and the Pain of Transcen-Dance

Pre Race Day of the Old Oraibi 8k; Hopi Reservation, Arizona, last saturday.

"If something can be remedied,
Why be unhappy about it?
And if there is no remedy for it,
There is still no point in being unhappy."
- Shantideva
Guide to the Boddhistva's Way of Life

one of the images that will be sure to flicker past my consciousness as i enter the Bardo, will be images like this one: a long ribbon of asphalt cutting like a knife through my Beloved expanse of the American Southwest.

consciousness requires space.

the Southwest has space...

lot's of it.

gives a Gemini mind like mine lots of elbow room in which to just abide...

as i climbed into Bala and appreciated the runner-like cuts (cuz ilg ain't no runner) in my ol' thighs as they swung into position for the 1.5 hour drive to Third Mesa, i had some mental jerky that my mind needed to chaw upon...and driving through the American Southwest? no better mental chaw terrain than the high, open spaces which protect Flagstaff from the rest of the Outer World. in fact, i reckon most new daddies would do themselves a world of go(o)d if they too, climbed upon their pony and headed into the remoteness of a very quiet - timeless, really - American Southwest.

A land where red rocks stand like serene sentinels...

...upon whose faces are etched the feverish compassion of eons.

Native Americans from these lands say that the Clear Mind can see the faces and shapes of the Ancient Ones within the weather-sculpted red rocks.

can you?

Wholistic Fitness is as expansive as its birthplace; the American Southwest.

and as i steered Bala northeast, off the dizzying heights of Flagstaff toward the Little Colorado River whose throat ran brown with monsoon runoff, i smiled at the phrase which some internet person had used to describe me; "he is the leader of a bizarrely unique fitness cult."

"So be it.." i laughed aloud to the sage and tamarisk!

for if such a cult exists from within the germination of my spirit?
surely it is one Gifted from the very witnessing of Mother Earth
and Father Sky. and if so, then how can such a bizarre cult be misguided if it be borne from the relentless, indestructible Light of our Mother and Father?

oh, ilg is an EASY target these days, more than ever. hec, 25 years ago, i had people people calling me a Satan-Worshiper because i wrote an article relating the benefits of a Native American Medicine Wheel to athletes. so, really, being a "leader of a bizarre fitness cult," is really quite a step up from a Satan Worshiper, ain't it?

Thoreau - one of my spiritual fathers - once spoke of earth translated;
"Be not occupied with looking. Go not to the object; let it come to you. What I need is not to look at all, but a true sauntering of the eye."

Same way with WF. Many thousands - millions by now - have looked closely at Wholistic Fitness...and walk away bewildered. This includes professional Trend Setters.

See, WF, like the Ancient Expanse of the Southwest and the Native Spirit which resides here - cannot be looked at and understood.

She must come to you.

And when She does, the Transmission is as powerful as the Cosmos. The multi-disciplined genius of the WF Lifestyle is as intricate and deep as night sky.

WF is not for everyone.

Only a few.

Warriors.

WF = A Red Earth Path for Warriors of Genuine Spirit. A bizarre fitness cult we are, in-Deed. Yet what a beautiful pure Path She is. i feel so Blessed to have Her come through me, live with me, and most of all; to be able to attempt to make a living sharing Her with you.

AT THIRD MESA HOPI VILLAGE: NO PHOTOS ALLOWED FROM NOW UNTIL THE FINAL PHOTOS OF RETURNING TO FLAG:

as i prepared to toe the Start Line - my second in as many weekends - Brahman created for me yet another miracle of chi on this 7,000' mesa of our most ancient of Native Americans; the Hopi. on the evening of my race, i was guided to a gathering of Hopi dances and later, two Hopi men drumming/chanting circles; "Black Thunder," and "Red Feather."

sitting less than 3' away from two dueling groups of Hopi men drummers - 7 to each drum - gathered around a handmade drum as big as an old growth ponderosa trunk and surrounded by an outer circle of female Hopis, and darting in and out of it all were Hopi children and teenagers, many of them holding up cell phones and recorders to capture electronically, the chi. my spirit was uploaded an ancient chi driven into each atom of my being by the haunting warhoops and drum beats.

over 50 Hopis coming, going, and gathered in a local plaza after getting 'kicked out of the parking lot' where they had already been dancing, drumming, and chanting for several hours in the hot sun and monsoon winds. they seemed nearly possessed yet i knew it was their chi on fire that kept them going on full throttle as night began to tuck in the pinion trees and horned-toad lizards.

still i yogi squatted next to those unbelievable spiritual warriors as the drumbeats mesmerized my thinking mind and expanded my Higher Mind. the Hopi drummers poured every once of their body/mind/spirit into their chanting, their drumming, and at times their downright beating from all that which felt impure, cheated, and sacred within them ...then, they'd stop, momentarily exhausted as the other group took up the charge.

staggering from the plaza beneath a darkened Father Sky sizzling with grand theatre of stars giving shimmering applause to distant lightning...barefoot on Anasazi earth, i gazed and felt and shook in ways like after-sex with the after-effects of the drumming circle...

i blow a tire at Oraibi 8k...

To work with changes now, in life: That is the real way to prepare for death. Life may be full of pain, suffering, and difficulty, but all of these are opportunities handed to us to help us move toward an emotional acceptance of death. It is only when we believe things to be permanent that we shut off the possibility of learning from change.
- Sogyal Rinpoche

How ironic is that? A yoga teacher pulls a hamstring during the first k of an 8k traditional Hopi Footrace in America's continuously inhabited village...did i finish?
what techniques did i engage if i did? how did i fare as one of the few 'panaah' or "white man" among a huge, olympic-status field of Hopi Runner on their own turf?

Off To My Final Hopi Race before Imogene...

Imagine that you had gone all your life without ever washing, and then one day you decide to take a shower. You start scrubbing away, but then watch in horror as the dirt begins to ooze out of the pores of your skin and stream down your body. Something must be wrong: You were supposed to be getting cleaner and all you can see is grime. You panic and fling yourself out of the shower, convinced that you should never have begun. But you only end up even more dirty than before. You have no way of knowing that the wisest thing to do is to be patient and to finish the shower. It may look for a while as if you are getting even dirtier, but if you keep on washing, you will emerge fresh and clean. It’s all a process, the process of purification.

Whenever doubt arises, see it simply as an obstacle, recognize it as an understanding that is calling out to be clarified or unblocked, and know that it is not a fundamental problem but simply a stage in the process of purification and learning. Allow the process to continue and complete itself, and never lose your trust or resolve. This is the way followed by all the great practitioners of the past, who used to say: “There is no armor like perseverance.”

- Sogyal Rinpoche

I'm taking again for Hopi Land...
an 8k footrace through the oldest, continually inhabited village of Turtle Island.
this will be my final gut-check for speed and concussion on my spine...then, it's time for some long, slow high-altitude runs before a taper for the biggest test of my broken spine yet; the Imogene Pass Race from Ouray to Telluride, Colorado.

it is deep honor for me to be hosted by the Race Director of

The Oraivi 8k Hopi Footrace

Juwan Nuvayokva, who might just win his own race tomorrow!

In fact, i have planted a long-time Dream Seed with several Tribal Elders to consider an Olympic Dream of mine; i want to train a Hopi Runner as a Nordic Ski Racer and have that Hopi Skier represent the Hopi Nation in the Winter Olympics.

if you thought the Jamaican Bobsled Team was cool...
just wait till the World gets a load of THIS!

if ilg can start the wheels rolling on this project,
i will need your help, so listen and respond if i ring the Temple Gong on this
avenue to restoring genuine Tribal Spirit to the Olympics.

My race tomorrow goes off at 7:30 am. Send your Chi; i'll be hammering away as best as i can, letting go into the Native Running Spirit...

May you pursue your own Dreams with the agility and speed of a high mesa harrier...

HEYA!

And do not ever forget Oh Noble Sangha;
where there is no cultivation of perseverance,
there is no yoga.

From the land of sage and sweetgrass and monsoon storms,

your loving coach

2008 Olympics...

am i watching the Opening Ceremony...

am i INTO the Olympics this year?

you might be surprised at my take on it all...

check out the WF SanghaLounge which is ALWAYS going OFF in the HIGHEST of WAYS!

In Snow(making) We Trust!

YEAH BABY! for those of you who have been following my support of making snow at Arizona SnowBowl...which has been a legal slugfest for years primarily because of Native American's opposing it due to religious reasons...well...

The Arizona Snowbowl received great news from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Snowmaking and needed improvements at the 71 year old resort will happen. The Snowbowl community is very pleased that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to rehear the case and affirm the original District Court opinion.

Judge Carlos Bea, writing for the majority, "Were it otherwise, any action the federal government were to take, including action on its own land, would be subject to the personalized oversight of millions of citizens. Each citizen would hold an individual veto to prohibit the government action solely because it offends his religious beliefs, sensibilities, or tastes, or fails to satisfy his religious desires. Further, giving one religious sect a veto over the use of public park land would deprive others of the right to use what is, by definition, land that belongs to everyone."

also,
it looks like i may be moving my "Can Do Clan" from our lovely Two Tree Manor out to the country into an adorable and cozy ranchhouse with what just might be the best view of all Northern Arizona high country...and this means i'll be only about 13 minutes from getting "First Chair" when the ski area opens! we'll also likely have space for WF Retreats right on our property!

more on this with pictures of our possible new h(om)e coming as details unfold!

Disciple of Light Pay Per PDF

Racing To Become A Disciple of "The Light"

click on photos to enlarge your chi hit...my race report from The 43rd Annual La Luz Trail Race...may this benefit your own Practice:

a big Sacred mountain...

and...

a humble WF yogi...

just getting to the Start Line...
just toeing the Start Line among hundreds of sport-specific runners, many of whom are wearing "Hardrock 100 Mile" t-shirts and speaking in cavalier terms of coming off 90-mile-per-week running volumes can be, i admit, downright scary for us WF athlete warriors who refuse to specialize for the sake of wholeness.

350 runners gathered. we've got 2 miles of 12% uphill pavement until we hit the La Luz singletrack; a sinewy snake of an ancient footpath that takes as direct a possible line up the gut of Sandia Peak to the Finish Line on the summit rim; elevation 10, 678'.

The Start Gun fires.

"There is no self-mastery without discipline," the Simone Weil quote comes to mind as i start my chronograph watch in sync with the "BOOM" of the Gun. i take third row, knowing from my feeble running volumes this summer that i only have a quality 1 hour and 45 minutes of steep uphill running in me.

after an hour and a half?

unknown territory. it'll be a tight squeeze for my run fitness. the winner in my Age Group is gonna crack 1:45. there are 35 in my Age Group. the average age of racers in this classic race is 42 years old. Simon Guiterrez who has won this thing 9 times in the past 12 years is precisely 42. he'll win again this year in another remarkable time of 1:22. dat's right; 1:22. he'll soar up and over the 9 mile, 4,680', 6 -climate zone, single track course covering each horrendously steep mile in 9 minutes and 11 seconds. Ananda figured i could capably run 15-minute miles. i figured she was about right.

ilg just wonders if Guiterrez bleeds red. would love to put him in a Downdog, see what his flexibility is like. wonder what he can Bench? how many pull ups can he crank? then again, that's just ilg...a die-hard Wholeness Professional. i respect sport-specific athletes. i do not, however, worship them. here is what ilg worships: Wholeness, versatility, balance, symmetry.

my Sacred Duty today, being a La Luz virgin is to gun it for what i know i can do; an hour and 45 minutes of uphill suffering, then, hang on. i figure my gas will run out close to the summit where, since everyone is hurting anyway, i can rely on my mountaineering experience and just speed walk the rest and limit damage.

"There is no greater source of discipline than the effort demanded in overcoming obstacles," wrote Weil. As i hit the singletrack in the top 75 of the 350 peleton, i thought; okay; i've got myself my obstacle; 7 more miles of single track up a Sacred Peak. let's party!

my new running shoes:

Nitrus Trail Running Shoe

are gripping the Lower Sonoran singetrack like crazy good. this trail is something like Vishnu Himself created while being intoxicated on whatever it is that the Deities get off on...this thing switchbacks so many times in her first three miles that i was getting nauseous. and high...airplane high. the canvas of the Rio Grande Valley was dropping like a granite boulder away from my flying feet. passing slower runners was an exercise of dynamic and dangerous yoga...

"On your left!" i would huff at my next victim in front of me and then accelerate, shrug my right shoulder and torso past him like an alpine skier brushing past a slalom gate. if misstep? the plunge straight off the narrow path and down the cholla cacti covered slope would be brutal.

back to Discipline.

the word itself means to be a Disciple.
so, i make myself a Disciple of La Luz..."the Light".

to be Disciplined...to be a Disciple requires no wisdom. no talent, nor intelligence. Discipline requires not strength, beauty, or bravery.

to be a Disciple requires but one shining quality...
