Warrrior Leaf Speaks...plus: Potent Quotes

"When man interferes with the Tao, the sky becomes filthy, the earth becomes depleted, the equilibrium crumbles, creatures become extinct."

yah tah hey coach!

congrats on the IPR sweat!

a 17-mile/sweat-lodge ceremony is an awesome experience, just wish i was there to attend.

nevertheless, a pilgrimage to the sacred arches of Moab was in order.

so fall time is setting in and i'm looking forward to the ski season. i guess the first step is to begin some roller-skating?

followed with some equipment purchase? what are your thoughts on the steps?

in the meantime i'll continue my sweat-lodge practice here in kinlani*

Diné crankin' to Higher Than Ever Summits...

WF Devotee, Single Dad, Native Runner Warrior "Leaf" (Tribal Nickname; Diné) enjoys some
bouldering at Priest Draw near Flagstaff. He didn't tell me that later fact, i can just tell... ;-)
his email to me today below:

Yah' tah' hey' from the sacred peak of the west!

i received the first arrow of the dreamspeak quiver and greatly thank you. Combined with the TBT i've managed to create a workout that best suits my single-parent lifestyle. Packed full of chi it's like you never left Kinlani*!

As for my recent adventure to the "old oraibi footrace" i once again experienced some medicinal-sweat. Along with me were my 2 sons tavian & zane and my good friend ben from phoenix. As a warrior-father i ran the 2 mile race with tavian and it was deeply moving to see my son run up and down the mesa. Also deeply moving and ever-inspiring was to observe him roam around the finish line with his race-bib on. Got to say that of all the fatherly-duties i experience with my sons, the exposure of a WF lifestyle to them is quite nourishing for my being. Running through the thick sand, hum-sahing out loud along side of him, nothing but pure chi!

This evening i managed to deter from our usual evening ritual of going straight home and headed for some boulders. enjoy these as they were inspired out of a WF lifestyle!

p.s. can you offer any basic-bouldering techniques that i can practice?

Now? ilg doesn't even have the 'guts' to tell you. let's just say it's very, very local around Durango.

"Nice climb..."
"Oh, thanks..." i reply resisting the egoic impulse to tell him that i rode the Passes back and forth on Saturday and did Track Intervals yesterday and that my legs felt as dead as tree stumps on the climb.
"Yeah, I couldn't quite follow your wheel...but just wait till you start getting grey hair...it's a lot harder to climb when you get older."

smiling politely, ilg takes the Noble Silence...eventually i find out that he is 7 years younger than ilg.

Hey Coach, sure hope your Wholiday was great, honestly. As for my wholiday it was about as genuine as it gets back home. I finally took some time to snap some pics. for my archives and I thought that I would share one of my favorites with you. This pic above is of the skeletal-frame of our sweat lodge. Recently an acclaimed anthropologist from Harvard decided he wanted to write a definitive treatise on the Native American culture of the southwest. He traveled to Flagstaff as his jumping off spot into the Navajo and Hopi Reservations.

For two weeks, the noted scholar camped among the ancient peoples of the arid land. Soon thereafter, he approach an Elder saying, "I have now witnessed your dances, I have now listened to your songs. I have a question."

The Elder nodded, affirmatively, encouraging his question.

Coach nails 4th Podium In 4 Different Sports This Season; Oraivi 8k - Hopi Footrace

here is a tiny part of what you are missing on today's Direct Lines...Daily Dharma Teachings from Sweat and Stillness since 1982...

the guy that beat me out of third place was pale face. Jeff. he qualified for Boston this year. i felt decidedly out of place again; a Warrior of Wholeness trapped among the Running Specialists. at the Finish Line, i told Warrior Leaf that i just missed out again on 3rd place and the treasured Hopi medals i craved so badly...

"You were close," said Warrior Leaf after we recovered from our Noble Effort in the Red Earth.

"Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades," i reminded him.

he threw his head back and caked in Warrior Sweat and stunning Hopi summer heat, the Diné...he did laugh.

that's why, "Hills make all men Brothers."

though our skin may be of pink or red or brown hues, all of our hearts beat with an ancient Tribal Rhythm. we Two Leggeds, are all of the same Tribe.

May your spirit ride forever,
May the Truth be rode forever within your sweat,
and may we - you and i - toe a Start Line together
before the Bardo Start Line...

Why WF Feels Soooo Familiar To You...

"If time truly is endless, we are very wrong to think of it as a straight line that stretches from a distant past to the most remote future. That line simply has to be curved. Sooner or later, it must meet itself and form a circle. Only circles go on forever.
Perhaps, as we are participants in the journey of eternity, this explains why our own lives tend to go round in circles too. Circles within circles, within circles. Don't be drawn away from the greater arc that you are now trying to describe. Think big and remember what really matters.
- Jonathan Cainer

"HOW DID YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE LEAVE OF THY YOGI CHRIST TREE?"

From Today's DL Teaching:

"...as a Yogi Father,
i NEEDED
my Daughter to witness
for Her cellular, spiritual profundity,
the quixotic juxtaposition of
snow (sauca),
night sky (yin),
cold (ida),
fire (pingala/yang),
smoke (bardo),
and the
burning (death)
of Bader.

Her 15 month-old eyes wide as the alpine meadow above which we live...

She pointed to Grandmother Moon, saying,
"Tah! Tah!" (HaTha Yoga means; Sun/Moon Yoga)

my Ritual went deep.

***
there is never a need,
and seldom should there be an urge to feel,
that what i have attempted to impart to you about WF
hold any religious connotation on your Sadhana.
inDeed,
religion and Sadhana are at polarity.
the former attempts to organize spirit through second-handed (multi million-handed more like it) dissemination
while the latter
is as spontaneous as a cloud and equally as moving.

for some of you my topic of tonight,
on this night of nights...

which drew my senses inward as Grandmother in her January best,

began to rise seductively over the shoulder of Mt. Elden,
may not fit
into your notion
of Fitness
yet,
to the Master Student of WF,
certainly,
how we treat our Christmas Tree Beings
reveals much about our standing-under (aka; understanding)
of what Yogi Christ attempting to Tranmsit to us
about Compassion,
Tolerance,
and
Loving Kindness.

give pause here, Noble Yogi.
ask Thyself:
"How did i handle my Christmas Tree Being this year?"

more pertinent to tonights' Teaching is another question:
"How did i choose to Take Leave of my Christmas Tree?"

should you think the latter question is non-relevant to your notion
of personal fitness,
of yoga,
of your entire spiritual growth process?

perhaps you should
Take Leave of this humble,
powerful Path
which i've designed to constantly
continuously bring the stalwart spiritual seeker
into a direct confrontation with his or her Mind
at every Blessed Step of their Journey Higher.

it occurs to me
that studying WF
- sincerely, i mean -
is like living in a cage of tigers.

hungry tigers...

Teachings from the Get Here Now Snow Guru

as a yogi,
feeble ilg realizes "i'm" to remain as much as possible in the Eternal Now.
however,
because ilg is such an astonishingly feeble yogi,
"i've" been very much taken out of the Present M(om)ent
because of a Deep Love for winter weather.
i nearly pack'd up my Clan to drive over to Telluride (5 hour drive) to immerse my Soul in Snow.
thankfully, it looks like a nifty-sized winter storm is going to party hardy here,
so i'll stay here, chop wood, and enjoy the snow show!

how i can still let something as simple as a possible snow storm pull me out of the
Present M(om)ment, rip away my Mantra, and send my ferocity fought for "Calm Center" into a quiggly mass of energetic jiggliness?
the reason
begins a long time ago in a magic kingdom of outdoor athletes known as Durango, Colorado...

RACE DAY IN OLD ORAIBI; WHEN A PILGRIM PULLS A HAM

i had found my Prayer Wheel; and it was my own flying feet...

- an injured coach ilg, in the final 800 meters of the Old Oraibi 8k footrace

The START LINE was a scratch of blue cornmeal across the weather-smoothed dirt in the America's most continuously inhabited village Old Oraibi.

Race Director Juwan Nuvayokva, the Hopi Harrier himself (#10 above photo), was giving final pre-race instructions. Wave of chi radiated from this six-time State Cross Country Champion who was born in this very village sprung from the rock themselves.

i took my place on the Start Line. Around me were 105 runners, 99 of them were Hopi, Navajo, or Zuni. only 6 of us were panaah (white man). i wanted, deeply as a Hopi drumbeat, to be the first panaah across the line.

during my warm up sprints, i was captivated by the long, graceful legs of a Hopi female runner from Ganado...having lived a life among world's fittest beings, i sensed immediately; 'she was SomeOne.' Moments later, on the Start Line, Juwan introduced a few of the VIP Racers...including the long-legged elegant warrioress now standing of my right shoulder, Alvina Begay...

2-time top 10 finisher at the U.S. Half Marathon championships, including a 1:12:57 PR earlier this year. Alvina placed 10th Overall in the 2007 New York City Marathon, finishing in 2:42:46.

Running, you see, is in Hopi blood as much as 'red' is in mine.

It was great honor to share Sacred Sweat with these unbelievably beautiful Beings in this most ancient place of this h(om)eland of ours; Turtle Island.

Juwan shouted "Go!" and we took off at a fast, albeit controlled, pace throughout the dusty adobe and rock walls of Oraibi where not much has changed since the 1100's. i settled into around 10th place and made sure Alvina was nearby. i'd use her as a pacing tool for the first few kilometer descent off the mesa. once we hit the sagebrush mesa flats below, i'd try to keep her within sight for as long as possible. i figured if ANYONE would know how to pace a race like this, she would. Besides, her nifty-fleet body was a joy to be inspired by as my sufferfest meter started climbing as high as the Hopi sky.

Kilometer 1; Soft dirt descent. Still in around 10th place, i was having the time of my life; enjoying my transformation from cyclist last summer, to runner this one. The sight and sense of me, panaah, in this flying flock of gathered Hopi's running with their long, quiet strides and sandstone solid heads, was thrilling. i felt fit, fast, and capable of a podium in my Age Group...and i desperately wanted to represent the panaah with bravery.

my deeply penetrating sacred joy would soon come to a very, very abrupt transition.

it occurred approaching Kilometer 2, still on this soft dirt descent from the village and the mesa upon which it has sat for eons. i was running side-by-side with Alvina on the two-track descent. a group of 8 Hopis were already ahead, lengthening the distance between them and us. behind me, a thundering herd of 100 Hopis hammering the descent.

that's when i made a tactical blunder and would pay dearly for it...

i blow a tire at Oraibi 8k...

To work with changes now, in life: That is the real way to prepare for death. Life may be full of pain, suffering, and difficulty, but all of these are opportunities handed to us to help us move toward an emotional acceptance of death. It is only when we believe things to be permanent that we shut off the possibility of learning from change.
- Sogyal Rinpoche

How ironic is that? A yoga teacher pulls a hamstring during the first k of an 8k traditional Hopi Footrace in America's continuously inhabited village...did i finish?
what techniques did i engage if i did? how did i fare as one of the few 'panaah' or "white man" among a huge, olympic-status field of Hopi Runner on their own turf?

Hopi Footracing; My Second Race approaches in this elevated land...

two excerpts from my current Series on Hopi Footracing from today's DL...

ancient tribal homeland and ceremonial dances which include,
oh forget it...

you should really just quit pretending and join your Tribe of WF and

here's a couple of excerpts...

precisely why most yoga teachers prefer to distance themselves from the notion that distance running is yoga! "Running ruins yoga," i've been told by yoga 'teachers' since the eighties. not in this Tribe, baby. in this Tribe? we uphold running as did the Ancient Masters; we consider running for what it truly is...an unequaled pilgrimage of sweat, self, and the long, silent distance. by the time i got back to Flagstaff at the end of my two consecutive days of racing against the Hopi's on their ancestral, sacred lands my battered feet looked the worse for their wear. within five days, i would take these feet and run them up the Sacred Peak, producing three layers of blisters. Yoga is intended to be self-confrontational. For until you confront your various 'selves', transformation - let alone transcendance - is impossible. that is why, in WF, everything that the human body is capable of is considered yoga practice. in WF, nothing is ever pushed away from yoga. it's all yoga. especially triple-layered blisters begotten from confronting ones limits during endurance footracing.

***

i felt Sacred.
i felt secure with death and impermanence as my menu for the night.

so, i fed my steak to Vishnu
and smiled, sealed up in my Bala Cave
awaiting the Dawn to prepare me for my final race against the Hopis
on their own ancient lands
never before raced by a white man's feet.

ilg was as happy as a king in his throne
in this desolate, elevated land
in which the Great Spirit seems to be
unhidden;
each tree a temple,
each bird a rinpoche,
each sideways look at a cloud turns ceremonial
in the simplest yet most profound of ways.

tomorrow;
i will race
upon blistered feet,
a broken back body,
yet
with a spirit renewed.

Hopi Footracing; Series Continues

The root of all phenomena is your mind.
If unexamined, it rushes after experiences, ingenious in the games of deception.
If you look right into it, it is free of any ground or origin,
In essence free of any coming, staying or going.
JAMYANG KHYENTSE CHÖKYI LODRÖ

photo by Bill Benzel. coach chasing down Hopi Runner Micah nearing the Finish Line of the Homolovi Suvoyuki Traditional Hopi 10k Footrace...

my story continues...

"Listen, Mother Earth," i hear in my head, "I am dancing upon you!"
"Listen, Father Sky," again comes the Voice, "I am dancing beneath you!"

it was then, suffering up that sandy arroyo, that Ishvara-Pradnidhana - the yogic tenet of Surrendering To The Divine - rippled across my consciousness and i relaxed.

i relaxed into the sand,
into the rising sun,
into my burning, broken back pain...

when the Hopis first settled here around 1260 AD, their oral tradition says that they refer to this period as "the gathering of clans." as i ran across their sparse mesa terrain this morning, the notion settled upon my spirit like a swallow-tail butterly sitting softly on my shoulder,
"...that's what WF is...a gathering of clans..."

Sunrise is the traditional start of a Hopi Footrace...in training, the Hopi runners often rise before Grandfather Sun makes his appearance on the horizon and then 'race the sunrise' to start the day. According to one of my Hopi Teachers, this pre-dawn running was done because the Earth Energy was greatest at this time and because it is so difficult to get out of bed and be active at this time, doing so develops a human's capacity to handle the stresses of life more effectively. When stressful situations come at us, they often come cold and hard. Getting our lazy butts up and out of the warm bed in the pre-dawn hours (see my DL's on Brahmamuhurti - the hour of God which lies between 4 and 6 am to compare with this Hopi teaching) develops our ability to confront stress and deal with it. above photo by ilg.

Registration table.
humble, isn't it?
everything about a Traditional Hopi Footrace is humble.
it is their Way.
racers were not timed.
everyone was already considered a winner by showing up to the Start Line (sound familiar to WF Dharma?).
we were Blessed by Hopi Micah Lomaomvaya whom would soon become my main focus of meditation during the race.
his Pre-Race instructions started with;
"Well, there is a big rock out there for the turn-around..." and chuckled.

fortunately, i had some pre-race beta from Neil Weintraub, leader of Northern Arizona Trail Runners who told me to expect highly difficult route finding through about 90% ankle-deep soft, red, snake-and-scorpian filled sand and a climb out of the Little Colorado River Valley after descending into it. cowpaths in the soft, energy sapping sand would be the deal of the day.

i was one of several palefaces, the rest of the 20-odd racers were Hopi.
blue cornmeal monumented the Start Line.

at the Start Line;
be it in snow,
asphalt,
a cinder track,
piney singletrack,
or
a red earth cowpath snaking through snakeweed across ancient native ruins
there stands inner questions more marked than the line upon which you stand;
do you have fear?
do you have doubt?
have you desires?
what is in you, now?

at the Start Line,
the yogi feels his or her samskaras,
often in overwhelming ways.

this broken back yogi
has many doubts,
many fears,
yet my desire to Rise Higher
is the strongest and most versatile arrow in my spiritual quiver...

so, out there, on that mesa
surrounded by sagebrush, ancient ruins, and dark-skinned Hopi runners,
i reached down to my running watch
and waited...

"HEYA!!!" yelled Micah and i felt my index finger press the Start button on
my chrono watch...

Most Cherished Sangha,
on this night of nights,
humble ilg feels so...serene.
i've taken pilgrimage to Hopi Land
and
raced two 10k Traditional Hopi Footraces along thousand year old trails cut straight up into mesas where no white man has ever traveled.

i have a story to share,
yet words,
on this night elude me...
i am weary,
my feet blistered,
body,
mind,
and
spirit has been tested, torn, and Healed by a Love from a Hopi Village
and a family that accepted me as their own.
what, exactly, happened to me for the past two days?
how could i be the Receiver of such a cascade of deep miracles
and infused Ancient Spirit which seems thought-proof
to recollection save for a penetrating bliss and serenity and power
beyond words
yet is so deeply interwoven with the natural world
that my fingertips feel like tears upon the keyboard.

6:00 am, Saturday, July 12, 2008. Moments before a Hopi Warrior made prayers and blessed us before the start of a 10k Traditional Hopi Footrace across the mesa land near the Little Colorado River...

allow your feeble teacher
a m(om)ent...
i've yet to re-center myself in the
Western World after this immersion into
the Real...

i must synthesize what has transpired,
what has Blessed my cells
through excruciating sweat
and
hawks, sandstone rimrock, infinite vistas
all saturated with spirit
of the Ancient Ones...

"For fast-acting relief, try slowing down."
- Lily Tomlin

the Zuni...known as A;shwii in their native tongue, is a long-honored Tribe in my life. these wonderful artisans still live within their eon-old h(om)eland of western New Mexico. if you ever get a chance to visit their Pueblo; do so. i once got a Road Racing podium on a 3-Day Stage Race that included stages that raced among their powerful mesa's and spirit-sizzling vistas. oh, how ilg loves these ever-smiling folk with such beautiful countenance and art...

yesterday, the A;shwii came to our backyard, beneath Doko Oosliid for a festival celebrating their Way of Being...so, into the "High Performance Deh Sleigh" (see photo #1) i tossed Deh (nickname for Dewa), drug Ananda out of her sleep-deprived stupor and jogged everybody up the street, out across the sun-whipped meadow, and through the ravine of the Rio de Flag. There, at the Museum of Northern Arizona, were the Zuni's...Great Beings Who Still Know And Worship Our True Mother (earth) and our true Father (sky)...

come along, why don't you?...
