From Tride...with love

Telluride, Colorado -

sittin' here in the five star lounge of The Peaks Resort after a very INTERESTING day of shooting footage for my intended, "WF Strength Training Teachings" DVD.

i'm looking out over Wilson Peak in alpenglow at sunset.

there is, simply, no other place like Tride.

period.

this morning, my lone Assistant called in sick with the flu.

trained in Chenreezig, of course, i felt compassion for both my intended assistant and my amazing contacts at The Peaks Resort who placed their beautiful gym on VIP status for my humble video filming (ilg TAFs that they thought we were gonna blow into their gym with like a ESPN Crew with all sorts of lights and make up and stuff.) Nope. Just me and Ananda...and Dewa.

Note To Shiva, thank you for endlessly grounding and re-grounding my attempts to channel the Divine Power of the Highest Mountain Yogis to the West through feeble ilg...it's been a hilarious and testing and absolutely Blessed Journey!

Plan B; default to pure chi as always:
Ananda and i shot great footage for your DVD (least i pray that you will buy one!)...in between watching Most Precious Jewel of a Rinpoche Dewachen as She bounded off rebounders, climbing onto Squat Racks, and generally made the Iron Temple at this most luxurious resort, well, a Temple as it should be; totally Fun, Present, and Limit Testing.

no pics just yet,
just let ilg say that ilg hit this most precious mountain retreat resort at the most stunning time of autumn...our precious Aspen Beings (which may not last the life of my daughter due to Human Being's avidya) are changing in a slow motion wave of stunning colors, and i promise you'll see a teaser of this priceless display on my new DVD.

along with a whole ton of WF chi...
that i know you have counted upon,
and still count upon
each day,
in the most strangest of ways,
to keep you
- and i -
- and my own family -
centered within what matters most...

the infinite Sacredness of Realizing The Preciousness Of THIS M(om)ent...
these lungs,
these ankles,
this Mind Wave,
this smile,
this anger arising;
this confused emotional turbulence...

Noble Seekers of Wholeness...permit feeble ilg to say this much:

it's ALL SACRED
and there is a profound reason why the word, "sacred"
is so similar to the word, "scared".

cuz,
truly,
if we are not scared,
we ain't gonna find
what's truly
Sacred
to our next bec(om)ing.

tomorrow: more filming; from the seat of our pants
in the amazing Iron Temple at The Peaks Resort
Telluride, Colorado
blazing
in a firewave of aspen and autumn colors a'changin'...

Blessed Be All,
Blessed Be Thy Workout...

Toward Wholeness, Noble Ones...
Toward Wholeness...
nothing less.

note; DO NOT ATTEMPT to mimic this movement without
deep judiciousness...biceps tendons very vulnerable if you are not
WF trained in this movement!

"Thank You For Writing 'Total Body Transformation' " - Warrior Saville writes in

"Hi Steve...
Just wanted to thank you for writing the book "Total Body Transformation"!

I have led a fairly active life over the years - running, lifting weights, triathlons (many years ago) and some adventure activities in Canada (I'm originally Canadian now living in Northern California after 12 years in New Mexico) - but durning the last several years I had been very sporadic in my training and diet allowing myself to gain weight and loose fitness.

At the age of 57 I find myself in a transformational period in my life and I've found your book very motivating and grounding. I love your approach and have begun to follow the Green Tara program in your book - my challege has been the High Performance Yoga® program - the sun salutations are fine but many of the other poses are difficult for me to master as my shoulders, hips, hamstrings and lower back are very tight - parsva malasana is a total no go and in halasana my feet are still quite away from touching the flower - as you can imagine virasana is pretty intense as well - so as my yoga journey is just beginning - I am happy to try to master the suggested poses and will continue to do so as I understand this is part of the process- but I was wondering if you have any suggestions regarding beginner poses that might help me transition from my current level of flexibility.

Thanks again for an amazing book!...

Sincerely...John Saville"

COACH RESPONDS:

Most Noble Warrior of Wholeness,

THANK YOU for choosing to share your insights!

ilg's counsel is:
subscribe to DL,
consider Online Training after you finish all the programs in TBT,
and,
most of all;
hang in there...within the restrictions lies your Highest and Most Sacred Summits...

remember, NO ONE was more inflexible than your ol' coach here; i was paralyzed!
if ilg can slowly over the decades make rich, wonderful inroads into my restrictions of body/mind/spirit...

ilg KNOWS a Warrior of your Caliber sure can!

pace yourself toward Enlightenment...remember that the Jewel lies in the Process, not results!!!

head bowed and Dharma Blessings upon thy Practice and May you realize your Practice everywhere,

WANNA FALL IN LOVE WITH ANOTHER ELDER STUDENT OF WHOLENESS?

So the other week, i got this in my Inbox from Student Rich Paul...

"HP Prop Yoga is the ticket."
WF Student, Rich Paul...cranking out an HP PROP WORKOUT at 58 3/4 years young,

"So, i took the
HP PROP YOGA DVD off the shelf where it has sat for about 2 years. Well, it took me a month of doing the "Core Only" portion nearly 6 days a week before i felt i was worthy to do the whole DVD. Now for the last 2 weeks i have done 2 Full Sessions a week, Thursday and Sunday along with daily Core Only. i love the way my body has responded. i might be 30 years younger! After the HP Prop Workout, during the rest of the day my whole body feels so muscular, light and thin...it makes me 40 years younger for the whole day! What am i telling you for, you already know! i should be telling my sons! Now i look forward to those 2 days like i do my EMR! Hope my sons do not wait until they retire before they tuff out the beginning to find the diamond at the end. - Namaste, student rp."

Then, upon my return from Imogene Pass Race, i get this from him;

Student RP in his WF Sport Jersey, with Mt. Baker. How much do love this Noble Warrior, Sangha??!

Dear Coach,
Here is some information about the 542 ride that i danced this weekend as you were also doing your uphill dance.

If you are interested: http://www.norkarecreation.com/hcmap&profile.htm

This is my 3rd year doing this ride.

The first two almost killed me.

This year i only had 2 months to get ready and no time to get on my bike to train.

So with the help of spin classes and 2 months to work out the HP Yoga, which was the "core" of the training, i made it to the top dancing on the peddles just like Alberto Contador.

Did not feel anyway near my 58 & 3/4 years of age yesterday.

There is no way in hell i would have believed that i would enjoy a 24 mile hill climb.

HP Prop Yoga is the ticket.

- your student, RP"

We're just getting Cross season underway here in New England and you'll be glad to know I have the best posture of any of the master's riders....thanks to you.

I passed along a couple of pics of my 14yr old
Son Nate taking flight. I'm sure Dewa won't be far behind.

All my best to you and your Clan.

The Art of Asana; Do Twists Need To Begin On The Right Side?

Dear Coach,

regarding your KINLANI FLOW DVD
you are so flexible for morning time!

will you please teach me about twists? it got planted in my head that for optimal digestion i was to twist/compress the right side first and the left side second. will you expand upon and/or clarify that for me?

with gratitude,
student coop

Race Report: Imogene 2009

photo by Ananda; Dewa discovered this ancient Push Sled in someone's front yard in Telluride after i finished my race...click to enlarge

ALL THIS WEEK FOR DL SUBSCRIBERS ONLY:
my Imogene Race Report and Teachings...read how to turn an absolutely messed up Pre-Race 24 hours into a spiritual Gift AND still crank to nearly a top-20 AG time against sport-specific runners! See GREAT PICS!!!!

don't MISS OUT!!!!

excerpt from today's Teaching:

"i might have laid in bed, getting angrier and angrier at how F*%ked Up was my Pre-Race Day (not eating, exhausted from driving) and Pre-Race Night (no sleep, baby crying, exhausting neural pathways instead of replenishing for the race) and such anger would only add to the frustration of seeing several months of training get blown into fatigue by this very common New Parent Scenario.

as a WF Warrior Yogi, however, we are trained in understanding the role of karma in all of this. The storehouse of karma is known as the karmasaya, and my Pre-Race Blow Up must be viewed from an inner understanding of the karmasaya. It could have been anything; an injury right before a race, a scheduling conflict that destroys the race appearance, it could be a new PR or throwing up on the race course itself.

There are no accidents as our various karmas await the opportunity to come into fruition. And my Pre-Race disaster must be viewed as one of these karmic opportunities in which to Practice, to purge, to Rise Higher!"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEWA!

Dewachen Catherine Ilg, our precious Rinpoche at the end of the rainbow - 2 years old today - as i asked her to pose for the camera. This is her first posed picture. Taken last week on our back deck.

Last evening, Joy told Dewa about the night she came through her belly. She told Dewa about how her and Abba (me) used to 'talk to each other with our minds' in meditation while she was in Mommy's belly. She related how, that on this night, two years ago, Dewa 'told us' that she was feeling brave enough to leave the beautiful nirvana of Amma's belly. So we went to the hospital and she came through so beautifully (thanks to Amma's amazing divine workout!).

As Joy finished the birthnight story to which Dewa was listening intently, Dewa reached around, pulled up Joy's shirt and kissed - ever so sweetly - Mommy's belly, whispering, "Howtch," Dewa's way of saying, "House."

Happy Birthday, My Precious Gem...My Golden Girl...My Highest Teacher...

off to Colorado we go, Birthday Girl!

Imogene; A Year Later - "I've already won." Shift Happens.

"There is a part of every living thing that wants to become itself. The tadpole into the frog, the chrysalis into the butterfly, a damaged human being into a whole one. That is spirituality."
- Ellen Bass

"I don't race to win. I race to make myself whole."
- Steve Ilg

it's mind boggling to think that in 1 Day, 22 hours, and 32 minutes from now, i will again toe the Start Line of perhaps my most Sacred Running Pilgrimage of my Blessed Life; Imogene Pass Run

i've had a love affair with this "most brutal trail race in Colorado," since the late seventies.

i still read my favorite book of all time: Tomboy Bride, as sacred scripture to get ready for this historic pilgrimage through the backyard mountains of my youth; the splendid San Juans.

ilg was a top-20 finisher back in the day.

the day after tomorrow?

i will be just trying to reach the Summit in the time i used to finish the entire 17.1-mile route!

i've written enough about the intimidating elevation and course layout in past years; you can read about all that on the race website or explore the DL Archives for my Race Reports.

this morning, i wish to dwell on the fact that has already emerged;
Ilg Has Already Won just by training steadfastly for this weekend's pilgrimage.
Ask any new parent. They'll know what i mean.

as i grow older, a world of recollection captures the essence of why i choose to be a wholeness freak when it comes to fitness and sport performance. despite being unenlightened, decades of multi-disciplined sweat and stillness has thinned enough of my personal cloud of unknowing (known in yoga as 'avidya') for me to become chronically enraptured by a sense of a higher calling...a deeper knowing beyond life's ups and downs.

i spoke just now of steadfast training for Imogene. any steady effort to hold onto a dream - a goal - will awaken dormant and unrealized potential. what fascinates is how blind-sided comes these Divine Awakenings of our innate enlightenment potential. rarely can we telegraph our next transpersonal Shift. it just, well, happens. Shift Happens. nothing really changes, except everything becomes calmer, clearer, more abiding.

and for me, Shift Happens because i stay focused on goals...dreams...podiums of self.

if ilg doesn't have a Start Line in my short, medium, and long-term future, then the future holds no interest. motivation stalls. the grip of mediocrity arrives and immediately i fight like a wild boar in order to higher soar.

ilg does not know what is your next Start Line...
your next podium of self...
your next most Sacred Mountain to climb.

i can only guess that it is that which frightens you most.
it's that which causes you the most pain, the deepest anguish.

Imogene, for me, has long frightened me since i broke my back.

even last year, ilg was more scared than sacred; i did not know to what degree my spinal injury would compress my vertebral nerves along the 3.5 hours of high concussion upon my fractured skeleton.

we must always, endlessly, start where we are and cultivate with steady effort the vision we have for ourselves.

the Path we choose will not necessarily make sense. we must use time wisely to follow the guidance of our spiritual being within; our spiritual heart. at age 16, i was a shoe-in to become an Olympian - if i stayed sport-specific. yet, i chose to follow a Path of Wholeness and Service to others.

and my heart has recorded each challenge, each new life that i began as my exploration into daring myself toward versatility instead of specificity roared from within.

i truly feel that my decades of Wholeness training has made me a far better partner, teacher, and most importantly, a father - than if i would have stayed narrowed and obsessively sport-specific. as i get passed by scores of more fleet footed warriors and warrioresses than i come Saturday, i'll relax deeper into this realization and just relish my Imogene Pilgrimage for what she means to me.

so, this weekend, ilg will cash my pranic paycheck up, up, way up along the ridges of the Uncompaghre. i'll hover up there - breathing a waving carpet of respiration molecules upon the wildflowers, decayed timbers of abandoned mines, and the bleached, splintered bones and stones.

i've done what it took to toe the Start Line of my next daring.

Saturday will not be a race as much as a celebration of a New Daddy, an old mountain yogi, a small boy still yearning toward a Higher Wholeness.

though the Start Gun has yet to go off,
this year,
ilg has already won.

no matter what.

FOR THE STATISTICALLY-BENT:

My Race Time from Last Year:
Summit (13,120'):
2:36:49

Finish:
3:37:43

Division Placing:

Overall Placing:
215

COACHING NOTE:
do NOT attempt to replicate the below training volumes, especially given my low caloric intake. i have decades experience on SUNRIDER Herbs, MAP Aminos, and yogic pranayams to make these figures safe and healthy. you risk injury, and illness and compromised training effect if you attempt to mimic these statistics.

(due to professional safety, i only post my training stats these days for DL Subscribers. thank you for understanding)

I'll update you when possible, however, we will be staying in the Ouray/Telluride nirvana through Monday....enjoy the DL Archives, leave a love note for me in our SanghaLounge, read TOMBOY BRIDE, and most of all; do what it takes to toe your next Start Line.

the deepest victories of self occur before the Start Line.

and thank you for all the well-wishes...
send me a mantra this Saturday, okay?

Wholistic Fitness® wins Best of Flagstaff Personal Trainers

us; "Endless Beginners" unafraid of Wholeness..embracing humility not specificity...

Noble Ones,

5:15 am...the world inside the WF Temple is quiet and sacred with Brahmamurhurti Prana...only the massive Elk Beings stir the wet, cold grasses outside.

ilg just spent an hour, felt like 10 minutes, inside the WF SanghaLounge...

'nuff said.

if you are not in there, yogi squatting around our Tribe's most intimate campfire, you are missing the Real Juice of just how precious, wise, funny, and beautiful are your WF companions along the Way.

each chamber, each discussion within the "SL" is more fulfilling to my Practice than all the magazines, talk shows, and websites put together.

all for free.

all that is required is your Presence; once a week.
and your Bravery to share.
to care.

for Wholeness.

let us, the WF community, lie down the Master Footprints for the younger generations to follow as we age. the younger ones, yearning toward Wholeness in their own lives, do not have great role models right now in the personal training scene.

WF is the original watering hole
for those thirsty
for spiritual growth
through genuine fitness...
not just chronically prescribed strength programs,
not just obsessively-bent endurance programs,
not just intellectual zen without sweat,
not just cleverly marketed nutritional gigs,
not just specific yoga so arrogant with fancy postures...
nope;
the WF SanghaLounge is the Tribal Chill for us "Endless Beginners"
that understand the necessity
of
"Attacking our Weaknesses,
Destroying Avidya,
and Pursuing the Great Spirit of Wholeness."

- see you in the 'Lounge,

What Have You Bought with Your Life?

What Have You Bought with Your Life?

On Resurrection Day God will ask,
"During this sojourn I gave you,
what have you produced for Me?"
Through what work have you reached your life's end?
For what have your food and your strength been consumed?
Where have you dimmed the luster of your eye?
Where have you dissipated your five senses?
You have expended eyes and intellect and the pure celestial substances;
what have you purchased from the earth?
I gave you hands and feet as spade and mattock for tilling the soil of good works;
when did they begin to work by themselves?"

- Rumi

The HP Yoga®
Wholistic Progression System

"Coach,
This morning in our beautiful, NAYC yoga-cave, you helped me to inhale the entire Universe, exhale my mind right out of my skull, and sweat at LEAST a day's worth of ego out on to the cave-floor.

It is now QUITE apparent to me that it is the DIVERISTY of my practice(s), not just the regularity or repetition of them that makes for success in my "Wholistic" growth!

CRY (Climb. Run. Yoga.) oN!

Using the HP Yoga Wholistic Progression System in place at NAYC (and available in DVDs for your out-of-town friends and family), you will be assured of a great, safe, and wise way to slowly shift your body toward the yogic goal of JivaLaghuvata or 'a yogic body of Light.' Each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday class affords unique physical, physiologic, and subtle training effects upon your body, mind, and spirit. As you continue to train within this system, you'll joyfully feel renewed, recentered, and more whole...you'll be able to tell by direct experience that this style was born from a Wholistic Fitness® tradition. There's nothing quite like it!

Bodywork, Online, and private consulations and training sessions within the disciplines of strength, cardio, yoga, meditation, nutrition, fat loss, and lifestyle training are always available. It's what i've done at a world-class level
since 1982. If you would enjoy myself or Joy to take a look at the Wholeness of your training, let us know.

A Clarification of Karma Transmitted Through Wapiti Beings...

Karma

ilg has seen many Sacred Terms become beaten, abused, and over-used to the point of pointlessness as the "new age" has turned "yogic." one of the most abused term is Karma...

"it's 5:18 am, this morning.

four Wapiti prowl among pre-dawn light among the grasses of "Buddha Hill" behind the WF Temple H(om)e. My statue of Gautama Himself, momentarily trapped between the legs of a spring-born Elk child.

i stall my steps out the door for my Early Morning Ritual walking meditation; content to leave my jaw dropped in awe at these Elk Beings - two children and two adults - and content to leave them to their own santosha. i find myself mouthing a Tibetan Protection Mantra; asking that..."

Meditation Excuses and a Dharma Teaching

oh, the excuses from Students not incorporating the fourth Noble Fitness Discipline of Wholistic Fitness® into their lives - Meditation.

ilg has heard about the kids. the 'bad knees.'

ilg has heard about the work schedule...the dogs, the lack of space, the lack of time...

here is what is lacking;
your willingness....

that is New Daddy Ilg up there; torso tilted, feet cramping and sliding out of a haphazard Siddhasana, it's past 10 pm...absolutely wretched posture, not elegant like Buddha...
fatigue these days seems my most faithful friend.

yet, still
ilg
sits.

Rev. Ilg prays for LA

As a son of the American Southwest,
ilg knows about the Scorcher Guru...
and the Teachings of Wholeness come hard:

"One second I'm crying,
one second I'm guilty,
the next moment I'm angry,
and then I just want to drink Tequila and forget.
I'm going to have to figure out a new philosophy:
how to live without loving stuff."

- Adi Ellad, who lost his home in Big Tujunga Canyon
where ilg used to train a lot when living in LA.

As the apocalyptic plume dances Shiva's Dance over my Beloved LA,
ilg prays...
yet, here in the words of a m(om) whose home was being engulfed by the flames
over Pasadena where many of my students still live, come the BuddhaWisdom Words
as the Conscious Mother attempted to console her young daughter:
"You have to surrender to the natural forces when you choose to live up here.
It's about nature doing its thing."

My Precious LA Sangha;

ilg sends thee
these pictures i
took,
not long ago
from outside the WF Temple H(om)e...

May the Rain Dance arrive,
May the Hanuman Winds dwindle,
and by your Grace and Strength of Practice,
May (y)our prayers be answered...

imagine the two photos side by side...
and you feel the Wholeness of Resplendent Abundance...
imagine the fractured parts of our fitness
aligned; Body, Mind, and Spirit
and
we attain the Wholeness of Resplendent Abundance...

Q&A with a new yogini who sees the Light of Wholeness

Dear Steve,

Can you please advise? I have 'experimented' with yoga in the past but get disillusioned after a few weeks as I don't seem able to increase my flexibility. I have especially tight hamstrings and lowerback/hips. At the moment I do do a cardio workout (cycling/power walking) 3-4 x week followed by at least 10 minutes of stretching. Again I am getting frustrated as I don't seem able to increase my flexibility. Many, many, many years ago I used to body build and a am wondering if this might be the cause (I accept I may just not be very flexible but would have thought I should be able to increase it more than I have to date). I think it is time to dedicate a little more time and effort to something like yoga, however I still want to get a work out (I have two children under 5 and so must make the most out of my workouts). Do you think you might have a DVD that would suit me?

Thanks

Mandy Choat

ps. I live in a small town in australia and cannot get to a class.

COACH RESPONDS:

Most Noble Fitness Warrioress Mandy,

1) hang in there.
ilg was paralyzed.
you can't get any stiffer than that!
if ilg can stick with it, you can too.

2) Practice Patience.
as a Wholeness Warrioress, you must understand that you are doing something that most are too timid, too weak to
attempt; you are attempting to attack your Weaknesses for the sake of Wholeness.
that requires far more strength and nobility than merely 'doing what you are good at."
so, ilg wants you to Rejoice In Your Process Of Wholeness...and apply PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!

3) get Joy's (my Partner) DVD:

Joy's QuickFix Power Yoga DVD

you can do either one, two, or all three of the 10-minute segments.
Joy designed the entire yoga program for people just like you...as a Mother herself, she knows
how precious a 10-minute slot is for Solo Practice.

May this Help your Journey, and keep me updated... ilg cares for your Wholeness...

love, sweat, and stillness,

coach ilg

head bowed and Dharma Blessings upon thy Practice and May you realize your Practice everywhere,
